Day 11: Kasese, 1st school day with children

Monday, November 20th, is the first school day with the children ages 4 to 15. We arrived late and even then we couldn't get started right away as the school had a welcoming presentation prepared for us. They did a few songs, a traditional dance, and one boy did a speech. (See photos) Also we had to meet the teachers and school staff.

Then it was time to teach.  We broke them up into two groups. Joshua took the older group and taught them how to play football  (soccer) which they really enjoyed as it is a popular sport here.  He is really good at teaching kids. I wish I had a bit more of his talent.

I took the younger children and taught very basic money topics such as money identification and 3 ways to use money (spend, save, give). Then we switched groups and I re-taught the same lesson but slightly more advanced.

Then the long hour ride down the mountain. Later: The days seem short with 2 hours of traveling each day and evening "de- briefing" with the pastor on top of washing clothes, lesson prepping, and sometimes making my own food (because then I can eat something familiar/safe).

Monday night we also bought and packed gift bags for 3 elderly ladies in the community.  The gift sets included essential things like a long laundry soap bar, salt, maize flour, matchboxes, kerosene (for light and cooking), sugar, bread and tea. We will be handing out 7 sets total but Tuesday we will visit only 3 elders.
