Day 39, 40, 41 & 42: Kampala, fun & travel

December 18th & 19th, Monday & Tuesday

Although I didn't feel well, with possibly malaria, I was able to have a bit of fun my last two days in Uganda with a boat ride, visiting a local beach (see photos), and watching a movie or two in a modern mall (quite the experience for Joshua's first time in any place that fancy!).  I tried to find a few good places to eat (ones that agreed with my stomach).  I wasn't looking for expensive but something a bit "normal".

When we came to a small corner dinner, I was excited to see a colorful menu (yes, gasp! a real menu!).  Seeing that they had something like a Taco Bell large chicken burrito, I ordered that.  The menu said 18,000 ugx (a little over $5) and at the bottom of the page in print: "includes chips [French fries] with orders on this page".  Well, okay, that sounds good.  I don't really care about the french fries but if they are include that's great, I thought.  Mmmm, the meal came and the burrito was okay, and they even had real Ketchup for my french fries.  Nice! Of course, there was only about 7 fries, pitiful really compared to even a U.S. happy meal. But hey, they are free, right?

After we were done they delivered the bill.  Wait, what?!  Those "included" fries were 7,000 ugx!  Let's see that's 1,000 ugx ($0.30) each fry!  I now dub thee the most-expensive-fry-I-ever-ate.  I did manage to find a KFC later which had a bit more normal prices/options.  Still chicken though. So tired of chicken, ha ha.

December 20th & 21st, Wednesday & Thursday

These were my travel days (see photos).  Wednesday, the day that I left was, without question, the hardest day of my trip and perhaps one of the hardest, saddest day in my life.  I have grown to love Uganda and its people and even with all the challenges and annoying days, I still had a hard time leaving.

Travel itself was good and mostly smooth sailing. Only problems were one delayed flight and my tickets (printed in Uganda's airport) were not printed with much ink so each airport had issues with my tickets.  Kenya didn't really care too much.  They just entered it in manually since others were in the same situation but Amsterdam had a whole hold-the-line-up moment while a nice gentleman reprinted my ticket from my original confirmation letter (thank goodness I kept that!).

I arrived home Thursday night to near zero temperatures, emotionally drained but hopeful to see what God as next for my life.

Thanks for reading my posts!

Swimming, green water meant being brave

This postcard says "How are u Muzungu? from Uganda a land where a stranger is greeted as a friend" It made me laugh. I didn't feel like a friend when being greeted by calling me "hey rich, white person".  I rather have a normal Ugandan greeting.
